The bedrock of this region consists of Paleozoic and older rocks of sedimentary and igneous origin that have been folded, faulted, and metamorphosed to varying degrees. Revised geologic mapping of Chester County, Pennsylvania was compiled by the Pennsyvania Geological Survey and published by Sloto (1994). The revised mapping included changes to contacts, formation descriptions, and nomenclature. The revised map was digitized in 1995 by the U.S. Geological Survey from a base at a scale of 1 to 50,000. The map shows the bedrock geology of Chester County, Pennsylvania, including mapped dikes and major faults. These features were separated into three data layers -- 1) bedrock lithology (ccgeopol - polygon data set), 2) dikes (ccdikeln - line data set), and 3) major faults (ccfaultln - line data set), all of which are needed to display the complete geologic map. The bedrock lithology (ccgeopol data set) is described in this document. The two pieces were digitized and edgematched to create a single coverage. Polygons and linear features were then attributed. PROCEDURES Both northern and southern areas of Chester County were digitized by using an Altek model AC 41 digitizer and digitizing tablet from the 1 to 50,000 scale mylar basemaps. The Altek digitizer has an internal resolution of 0.001 inches. Digitizing was done directly into the Albers conic equal-area projection. The base map projection is the Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system. Chester County is in Zone 18. The tic registration error or route mean square error (RMSE) for both northern and southern areas was no more than 0.004 inch (or 5.08 meters). Tics for map registration were at the corners of 7.5 minute quads in the mapped area. The bedrock geology was digitized into polygons, and dikes and faults were digitized as linear features. Some dikes are thick enough to form polyg polygons. Quaternary alluvial units were digitized but were removed to a separate data set from the bedrock geology. The snapping tolerance used for lines and nodes is 25.4 meters. This distance moves the digitized line or node to coincide exactly with another line or node. The weed tolerance, or minimum distance between vertices, is 2.5 meters. Thus, if a digitized vertex is within the weed tolerance of the previously digitized vertex, it is not used in defining the shape of the arc. (ARC/INFO aml was used to digitize, specifying double precision, weed tolerance of 2.5 meters, arcsnap and nodesnap on 25.4 meters, no duplicate arcs.) Topology was built using a dangling line tolerance of 25 meters and a fuzzy tolerance of 2.5 meters. The dataset has both polygon and line topology. Check plots were generated using the UTM projection for zone 18. Errors on check plots include some deviation in topology relative to the base in areas where polygons are extremely small and(or) tight curves are present. (ARC/INFO aml was used to give digitized data topology and add item SQM (square miles) to attributes of data set.) Following is a brief summary of arc and arcedit commands used to create the digital data sets. 4.1 Setup of North and South Halves of Data Set with Tics Tic marks at the corners of 7.5 minute quadrangles were used for registration (pagrid data set). (Note that pagrid data set consists of tics at the corners of 7.5 quadrangle maps and was generated by specifying an origin and upper left corner for the state of Pennsylvania by S. Hoffman of the USGS, Lemoyne PA ands is in the Albers projection). 4.2 Initial Digitizing of northern and southern data sets All lines were digitized, including dikes, faults, geologic contacts Northern half digitized = chest_north Southern half digitized = chest_south 4.3 Introduction of County Boundary Chester County boundary introduced as polygon data set to complete polygons around edge of county (source of county boundary = digitized political boundaries of topographic maps , U.S. Geological Survey County Map Series (Topographic) 1 to 50,000, North and South Sections, Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1983) 4.4 Merging of North, South, Boundary data sets The county boundary, northern and southern halves merged using the arc command 'append'. Edges were matched using midpoint of distance between arcs. 4.5 Moving of Quaternary Alluvium into Separate data sets Outlines of quatenary alluvium (Qal) were removed from data set to a separate data set (qal).
